Tricky Trends And How To Make Them Work

March 30, 2016

Trying trends and making them work for you is half the fun of fashion. Some trends are trickier than others, and require a solid game plan before you attempt them. To save you from a fashion faux pas we have examined four of the hottest trends of the season and how to execute them.

1. The Backpack

We love that the backpack has returned to mainstream fashion. It’s an extremely versatile piece and can take your outfit from average to fashionable with the simple addition of an extra strap. However, you do run the risk of looking like a fifth grader on their first day at school. Opt for structured, dressier outfits to compliment the casual cool of the backpack. This is no place for boyfriend jeans or sneakers, so if you aren’t prepared to make a little extra effort, put the backpack back on the shelf.

2. The Victorian Blouse

Victorian inspired fashion has re-emerged on the streets of Paris and on this season’s runway shows and we are in love Fluttery, voluminous blouses are the key product of this trend, but are notoriously hard to wear. Stop yourself from looking like you’ve stepped out of a Jane Austen novel by pairing your blouse with casual fabrics like denim. Tailored, modern denim immediately modernizes the blouse and takes it from prim and proper to quirky and cool.

3. The Extreme Split

We have never seen more risqué splits than in the last few months. Thigh high or even waist high splits have been heavily featured in skirts, pants and dresses of late and are definitely not for the faint of heart. If you feel up to giving it a go, make sure you pair it down with looser, more covered pieces up top. High split dress? Throw on a boyfriend blazer. High split skirt? Tuck in a loose knit top. You know the drill.

4. The Lingerie Slip

Boudoir inspired outerwear continues to be a strong trend this season on the runways, but has left us puzzled as to how to transition it into real life. The key rule here is that it just doesn’t really work with flats. Toughen up a silky lace slip style by adding leather heels and a structured bag. Still feeling exposed? Throw on a cosy cashmere cardi to finish off the look.
