This season has been all about tonal dressing - the art of layering similar shades together in a cohesive outfit. The Kardashians have been killing it with this trend for months, and it has started to gain popularity on the high street. Done right, tonal dressing can give you a really beautiful, long silhouette without the help of six inch stilettos. Done wrong, and you look like a hot mess. There are three things to think about when trying this trend – texture, color and quantity.
The texture of each piece in your outfit should be different. If you’re walking around head to toe in pastel pink leather, you’re doing it wrong. Contrasting a knit dress with suede heels and a patent leather handbag makes each piece pop and breaks up the outfit without disrupting its flow.
The choice of color or tone is make or break for this trend. Avoid bright or fluorescent hues at all costs, and instead opt for soft nudes, greys or pastels. If you want to push the envelope a little, branch out into shades of emerald and oxblood, but keep it to evening wear only.
The last thing you need to consider is the amount of items you are wearing. This trend is all about keeping it clean, minimal and sleek and that means sticking to a maximum of five items of clothing worn at any one time.
