Award winning costume designer Mark Bridges was the inspiration behind the Fifty Shades fashion. Mark took a unique perspective when it came to styling Anastasia’s looks. Bridges didn’t read the books giving him an unbiased perspective of Anastasia’s characters. He just read the script to tell the story. He also designed the majority of the costumes as opposed to sourcing out designer pieces.

Bridges didn’t eschew labels altogether in the film, but made a deliberate decision to help further the story. His decision was guided by the notion that people are savvy about clothes and recognize designs from certain collections which subsequently dates the film. By avoiding designer choices the film focused on the story and the relationship rather than the glitz.
