The off the shoulder blouse
If you don’t already own an off the shoulder blouse then where in the world have you been hiding. They are totally unavoidable on the high street with every designer and chain store basically throwing them at you and offering at least one version of the style in their spring collections.
Their return from the 90s has been swift and they seem to only be increasing in popularity as the weather heats up – but are they here to stay? Much like the jelly sandals and fluro trends before them, we think not. But that isn’t to say the style doesn’t hold some value.
We love that it exposes universally flattering areas of the body – your collarbone, upper back and shoulders. It gives your triceps some cover for those girls who haven’t done their push ups and hides a multitude of sins around the waistline.
But here’s the kicker – they are absolutely impractical to wear. The Instagram models we see them on day in and day out aren’t actually doing anything because this top makes it physically impossible to do so.
You can forget walking down the street, hugging a friend, reaching for anything or even taking a tiny sip of your Vodka martini without having to readjust the whole thing. The elastic holding the shoulders in place is constantly campaigning to move up or down and more often than not, ends up around your neck or around your waist – the latter of which is particularly unfortunate.
Not ready to admit defeat with this one? Take some cues from our favorite street stylists and opt for styles that stay put. Thick top hems and stiff fabrics will give you the best results, so let us know how you go with this tricky trend.
