We all have our pet hates and ladies, this is mine; the see through leggings that some people presume are an acceptable form of pant. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my personal opinion is that leggings are not pants - and they never will be.
That’s the short answer. With that being said, fashion is never black and white. And if there’s one trend that falls in a gray area, it’s the act of wearing leggings as pants. So why are we against it? For starters, some leggings are deceptively sheer and much too tight for their unsuspecting wearers. And while that whole second skin thing might make you feel super comfortable, skin tight leggings more often than not result in the dreaded camel toe. Yikes!
Secondly, leggings provide very little support and shape in the three key areas where most of us need it. Yep, you guessed it: the rear end, hips and thighs. Sure, fashion doesn’t have to be uptight or uncomfortable, but there’s something about leggings that screams sloppy.
It is important to keep in mind that styled right, leggings are a useful part of your closet. Opting for thick or opaque styles that do not become sheer in direct sunlight (try before you buy ladies) is the only viable option here.
Say yes to leggings with…
- Short dresses, mini skirts or sweater dresses
- Longline tunics
- Plain or chambray button-downs
- Maxi sweaters
- Boyfriend shirts
A simple rule to wearing leggings is to always ensure whatever top you are wearing reaches to below your backside.
Say no to leggings with…
- Tank tops
- Crop tops
Anything shorter than your upper thighs is too short for leggings. No legging in the world is thick enough to totally cover your backside in any lighting so don't take the risk.
Steer well clear of any leggings that are shiny, ultra tight or light colored. All are particularly unflattering and have the potential to cheapen the look.
The ongoing debate over whether or not leggings are appropriate to wear as pants is sure to continue throughout fashion cycles. The way you style them will be the biggest determining factor when it comes to which side of the debate you (and your tush) will end up supporting.
