There are more ways than ever to wear a bun, and we can’t pick our favorite! Long gone are the days when buns were for uptight women, and severe ballerina styles have been replaced by relaxed, wispy topknots. Check out our five favorite ways to wear the look and step out of your bun rut!
1. Classic and sleek
This style bun is perfect for dressier affairs and wears just as well for black tie events as it does for work. The key to perfecting this look is finding the right height for your face shape. Sleek high buns are super in right now, and the easiest way to achieve a full, thick looking bun is with a foam shaper. Tie your hair in a ponytail at the height you are comfortable with, and then push the bun shaper to the base of the ponytail. Hide it by folding your hair over and around and securing with pins.
2. Topknot heaven
This style bun has been crazy popular lately and can come in a few variations. It is best with hair that has a little bit of natural texture, so give this look a go on the last few days of your blowout. Mist ends and roots with a texturizing salt spray or mist and tease lightly with your fingers. Then tip your head forward and twist your hair into a coil, securing with a hair tie. Work your fingers through the roots and allow for a few strands to hang loose around your face.
3. Get it twisted
This style is a really interesting yet effortless take on the classic bun. Section your hair into two equal amounts, parting in the centre of your head. Twist both sections and then tie together with a hair tie a few inches from the base of your head. This should allow for a small opening between the two sections. Take your ponytail and thread through that opening to fold back over and cover the hair tie. You can make this as messy or as tidy as you would like after securing with a light hold hair spray to tame fly aways.
We love art deco style accessories in hair and so do the designers. Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Prada all featured luxe hairpins and crowns in their SS16 collections and they are perfect for adding a little extra glamour to a classic hairstyle. Fold hair into a low sleek bun and insert the hairpin at its base to add a subtle sparkle to the look. We recommend using smoothing shine oil throughout the mid lengths for this look.
5. Half up, half down
The half bun hair do is a huge street style trend at the moment and is an ideal look for the indecisive girl. Achieve this on trend look with the help of some volumising spray and a flat iron. Quickly and roughly tong your hair into casual waves with your flat iron, and spray with the volumiser at the roots and throughout the mid lengths for hold. Take the top half of your hair from just above your earlobes and twist into a knot.
