Are you a mani-pedi addict but trying to shift those last few pesky pounds? We don’t want to alarm you, but your weekly trips to the nail salon could be causing you to gain weight.
A recent study by Duke University shows that nearly 50% of nail polishes on the market contain the chemical triphenyl phosphate, often referred to as TPHP. This chemical is used in nail polish to give it flexibility and to stop your polish from chipping, but it has been linked to disruptions in hormone production and even reproductive function.
Scary, right? But that is not even the worst part.
Researchers tested a group of 26 women to see the effects of one that a trip to the nail salon could have on your body. The results were unbelievable. Just 10 hours after painting their nails, all 26 participants had a seven fold increase in the levels of diphenyl phosphate in their system.
Changes in hormone levels can results in fluctuations of weight and other health issues, but the good news is that you can avoid these possible side effects by being clever with your color and brand choices.
Clear nail polish has been shown to have higher levels of the chemical than their colored counterparts, so avoid your usual clear base coat if it is one of the brands that use the TPHP chemical. Also, avoid applying directly on to skin wherever possible, as this allows the chemical to travel more freely through the blood stream.
Moral of the story: check the ingredients list on your nail products or ditch the salon visits all together. We have rounded up our favourite non-toxic nail polishes from Deborah Lippmann so you can polish away without the possible pounds.
